Here's information about our 2009-2010 Season!

The Music Series at South Church, 90 Main Street , New Britain , Connecticut , announces its 2009-2010 concert schedule. Now entering its 37th season, the Music Series will present a diverse array of concerts in a season titled “Perfect Harmony.”  All events are open to the public and will take place in the sanctuary of South Church in New Britain.

 

The Jupiter String Quartet with pianist David Westfall

Sunday, April 18, 2010 , 4:00 p.m.

The South Church Chamber Society, now in its eighth season, welcomes back the award-winning Jupiter String Quartet.  Repertoire includes Haydn’s Quartet in D Minor, Opus 78, Janacek’s Kreutzer Sonata, and with pianist David Westfall

César Franck’s Piano Quintet in F Minor.  A reception follows.  Free-will donation

 

 

“Strawberries and Jazz”

Thursday, June 17, 2010 , 7:30 p.m.

Our season concludes with a variation of the popular Strawberry Festival. 

Berry treats begin at 6:00 p.m. , and 7:30 brings a fun-filled concert by the Hall High School Jazz Combo, playing all your favorite jazz standards.  A perfect summer treat!

The popular Sunday mini-series of 30-minutes recitals continues, this season featuring favorite local vocalists.  Free-will donation at all concerts. Followed by brunch in the parlor. 

South Church is wheelchair accessible. Designated handicapped parking spaces are available on Main Street in front of the church. “Orpheus in England - Music of Dowland and Purcell”

Tuesday, November 3, 2009 - 7:30 p.m.  

Our season opens with one of Great Britain’s foremost sopranos and early music 

specialists, Dame Emma Kirkby, joined by lutenist Jakob Lindberg in a program

of lute songs and fantasias by John Dowland and Henry Purcell.  

A ticketed event.  Tickets: $25 Premium, $15 General, $10 Seniors/Students.

 

A Candlelight Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Sunday, December 20, 2009 , 4:00 p.m.   

 The beautiful South Church sanctuary is an ideal setting for this celebration of 

Christmas through word and song.  The festival includes nine scripture readings and Christmas anthems and carols.  With the South Church Chancel Choir, Richard Coffey , Choirmaster, and David Westfall , organist.  A reception follows.  Free-will donation

Guitarist Peter Fletcher

Sunday, February 21, 2010 , 4:00 p.m.

Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher brings virtuosic dexterity to his favorite type of 

performing venue, a sonorous church space.  He will perform a wide-ranging program 

of works and transcriptions by a variety of composers, including Handel, Bach, 

Grieg, Satie, Ravel, and Villa-Lobos.  Free-will donation   

 

 

CANCELLED Morris Robinson, Bass CANCELLED

Sunday, March 21, 2010 - 4:00 p.m.

 

The Music Series regretfully announces the cancellation of the Morris Robinson concert.  Morris is ill, and has been ordered to vocal rest for one week.  No plans to reschedule are in place at this time.

We regret any inconvenience! 

Former football player turned opera singer Morris Robinson is quickly gaining 

a reputation as one of the most sought after basses performing today in opera, 

concerts, and solo recitals.  His “miracle voice of endless potential” is sure to fill our 

space with rich warmth in a recital including art songs, opera arias, and spirituals.
